There's lots happening to celebrate NZSL Week 2010 throughout New Zealand; get involved and explore the world of New Zealand Sign Language with us.
Here are some ideas of how you can celebrate NZSL Week:
Order a finger-spelling alphabet card and learn the NZSL alphabet
Say "Kia Ora" or "hello" using sign language
Find out the sign for words and sign rather than use your voice
Commit to a "voice off" or Silentathon where you use NZSL rather than your voice to communicate
Give a donation to NZSL Week to help us develop more NZSL resources and to provide access to information for Deaf people
Display a poster at your workplace, school or community centre
Order other resources and start learning NZSL
Instigate a "sign for the day" at your workplace and commit to using one new sign/word everyday
Tell your friends and family about this website and encourage them to try Sign Language
Come and celebrate with us - NZSL Family Fun Days will be held in regions around the country. These free events are a day out for the whole family, and include NZSL games for children. The day provides a chance for the Deaf community to celebrate their language and for hearing New Zealanders to learn NZSL and find out more about Deaf culture
Take advantage of a one-off 'taste of NZSL' class - there are over 290 happening throughout the country during NZSL Week
Parents and kids can encourage their teachers to register for the School NZSL "Tool Kit" designed to give children in Years 5 - 6 a taste of NZSL
Nominate a business, school, Interpreter, or individual for the New Zealand Sign Language In Action Awards
And you can go along to one of the many local community events organised in your area including, Shopping Centre stalls, Deaf club open days, taster classes
