NZSL Week is a celebration of one of New Zealand's official languages. It is organised by Deaf Aotearoa New Zealand on behalf of all members of New Zealand's Deaf community.
As a not-for-profit organisation, Deaf Aotearoa promotes NZSL, works with and supports D/deaf people in all aspects of their lives, provides Deaf Awareness Training for businesses and organisations and lobbies for better access to opportunities on behalf of Deaf people.
In the first week of May each year, Deaf Aotearoa organises NZSL Week to raise awareness about and celebrate both NZSL and being Deaf.
It's the biggest event on the Deaf community's calendar and celebrations are held throughout the country.
NZSL Week aims to:
- Think.Sign!
- Raise awareness of NZSL and promote it as an official language of NZ
- Educate all New Zealanders on how NZSL gives access to information and services to Deaf people
- Increase the number of people learning NZSL
- Encourage people to use NZSL as a natural means of communication everyday
- Encourage ownership and support of NZSL from the Government
